TWO OF OUR FEATURED MAKERS:

I’m artist living in Oakland, California. Any art I make is to repair, nurture, and better understand my relationship to this life. In quilting, I work primarily with used, found (sometimes in my own closet), thrifted, and donated fabric of any content, including synthetics. Sewing with second-use materials is in service of sustainability, but it also adds challenge, connection, and mystery to my generative experience. “Limiting” myself to used fabric opened my eyes to the huge abundance of cloth of all kinds that is already here, some of which will never go away. I ask myself, what has been the journey of this piece of cloth? Who did it belong to and what has it been present for? Where will it be 100 years from now?

I’ve been drawn to textiles from a very early age, influenced by the women in my family who made clothes, home furnishings and quilts – often from recycled or repurposed fabric. I learned to sew on a treadle sewing machine at age 10 and started quilting in 1995. I did not use patterns but taught myself to look: find the block; figure out the construction. I studied art books and books on quilts – focusing especially on Amish, antique, and African American quilts. Throughout my quilting career I have resisted being placed into a specific category – I make the quilts I want to make, regardless of where the inspiration or fabric comes from.
