Meet the goats at Hidden Villa, and learn what you need to know in order to start a small goat dairy… at your home! We will discuss various breeds of goats, their strengths and weaknesses and practicality for different uses as well as issues specific to goats as ruminants. You will learn about goats’ minimal needs, and how to keep their lives vibrant and happy. This will include nutrition and preventative health measures, pen design and equipment, breeding and raising young. We will also talk about the process and equipment necessary to run a small dairy, including handling milk and dairy products that can be easily produced on a small scale.

Teacher Jeannie McKenzie has been involved in many aspects of the urban homesteading movement for over twenty years, and she’s excited to share her knowledge of and passion for home goat farming.

Big Buzz about Bees

HV Photo

For children of all ages, with guardian

Bees are wonderful, helpful creatures.. and this class, designed especially for children, is a terrific way to introduce them in a fun and age-appropriate way to this amazing, tiny winged friend of humans. Teacher Kendal will open your child's eyes, and yours too, with stories and lots of interesting things to show about an often unfairly feared little being.

Everyone gets a chance to see and touch all the parts of a working beehive and learn about the tools that it takes to be a beekeeper. We’ll talk about how bees collect pollen and nectar and contribute to many of the foods and products we love. We’ll also explore the many jobs that the different types of bees do inside and out of the hive. The class wraps up with taking a peek inside of a real working hive (it’s completely contained safely behind plexiglass) so we can see real worker bees caring for young larvae, making honey, and if we’re lucky, we may be able to spot the queen bee! And of course, we’ll taste the sweet rewards of beekeeping - honey harvested locally in Los Altos!
