Residential Internships
Residential internships offer the unique experience of living and working on a farm and wilderness preserve while learning aspects of environmental education programs, sustainability, organic agriculture, animal care, and nonprofit administration. Agriculture internships begin in Feb/March and run for a full year. All other internships run from the Labor Day weekend in September until the end of August of the following year and include day and evening programs for children and families during the school year and summer camp.

Agriculture Journeyman Farmer (1 position): The Journeyman Farmer position is a higher level farmer-in-training program geared for someone with previous farming experience. The Journeyman Farmer works in conjunction with the Agriculture Manager on field and greenhouse production for the CSA, the Community Services Agency of Mountain View, camp programs, and farmers’ market. Responsibilities focus on training and supervising first year interns, summer interns, and volunteers and on staffing the farmers’ market stand.

Agriculture Internship (1 position): Agriculture interns, one hired through the M.E.S.A. (Multinational Exchange for Sustainable Agriculture), work alongside Hidden Villa’s Agricultural Manager and experience the entire annual production cycle of an organic mixed vegetables and fruit farm. This position involves all aspects of working on a small-scale, direct market, organic farm.

Environmental Education (6 positions): Hidden Villa’s Environmental Education Program (HVEEP) provides educational experiences for children, ages 3-13 in the areas of farm, wilderness, and sustainability topics. HVEEP interns learn to teach small groups of preschool and elementary school children in a farm and wilderness setting, as well as in the classroom. They also live on the farm, and participate in daily farm chores.

Community Programs (1 position): Interns will learn how to interface with the local community in order to provide information for Hidden Villa’s visitors and to assist in developing programs for adults and children. The responsibilities include teaching and leading a wide variety of classes and programs for groups and the general public. This position also requires working every weekend (Saturday and Sunday) with Tuesdays and Wednesdays off the following week.

Animal Husbandry (1 position): Hidden Villa maintains a small mixed selection of farm animals including cows, sheep, goats, pigs, and chickens. The internship involves learning about the care, maintenance, and breeding of animals. This program helps support our programs for youth during the school year and summer season. It requires working every weekend (Saturday and Sunday) with Tuesdays and Wednesdays off the following week.

COMMUNAL LIVING
Ten interns live together in the White House and adjacent Brownlee Cottage; they share a kitchen, living room and bathrooms during the school year. Four interns live in shared rooms. During the summer season, the farm is shared with camp staff, as well as the youth we serve. Summer housing assignments vary on the program area interns choose to work in. Residents participate in house meetings, chores, and cooking.
MONDAY CLASSES/FIELDTRIPS
Monday enrichment classes are provided from September-May for all interns and range in topics related to animal husbandry, sustainable agriculture, horticulture, education, and non-profit administration. Once a month the interns also go off-site to visit and network with other organizations in the community.
SUMMER PROGRAMS
Environmental Education & Community Program Interns will work as a part of our summer counseling staff, in the program of their choice; we offer programs for youth ages 6-17. Interns will also have an opportunity to apply to be summer camp Program Heads or Auxiliary Staff. All interns will be helping to develop curriculum to be used during summer camp programs.
