This class is all about lovely fluttery butterflies! We will learn about the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly, everything from their several thousand mile migration to their favorite foods - did you know, they taste with their toes!? We’ll even look at live caterpillars and chrysalides, if we’re lucky, we might spy some eggs or a hatching butterfly! Geared for ages 4-10, but great for the whole family.

In the milking parlor, you will work with a trained professional and practice proper hand milking techniques. We will measure how much milk is produced and then filter the milk and prepare it for storage. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Only paid registrants enter our very small milk house - this is a very hands-on experience!

Big Buzz about Bees (Sun. 23 Jul, 2017 10:00 am - 11:00 am)

HV Photo

For children of all ages, with guardian

Bees are wonderful, helpful creatures.. and this class, designed especially for children, is a terrific way to introduce them in a fun and age-appropriate way to this amazing, tiny winged friend of humans. Teacher Kendal will open your child's eyes, and yours too, with stories and lots of interesting things to show about an often unfairly feared little being.

Everyone gets a chance to see and touch all the parts of a working beehive and learn about the tools that it takes to be a beekeeper. We’ll talk about how bees collect pollen and nectar and contribute to many of the foods and products we love. We’ll also explore the many jobs that the different types of bees do inside and out of the hive. The class wraps up with taking a peek inside of a real working hive (it’s completely contained safely behind plexiglass) so we can see real worker bees caring for young larvae, making honey, and if we’re lucky, we may be able to spot the queen bee! And of course, we’ll taste the sweet rewards of beekeeping - honey harvested locally in Los Altos!
